Project Pink'd continues to strive to address the REAL issues breast cancer survivors face after a diagnosis. Our Straight Talk: Ask An Expert series explores issues of particular interests to breast cancer survivors and provides LIVE access to professionals (both medical and non-medical). With the ease of just a click on a participant's phone, iPad, or computer, the live video webcast format enables survivors and their families living throughout the state of Nebraska and Western Iowa access to chat directly with the professional.

Join us for our next Straight Talk: Ask An Expert on Tuesday, October 6, as we take a closer look at what to expect when visiting Truly U for a post-treatment bra fitting. We’ll walk through a mock appointment from start to finish, including the personalized fitting process and the questions you may be asked along the way.

  • When facing a breast cancer diagnosis, understanding your treatment options can help you feel more informed and empowered. In this Straight Talk: Ask An Expert session, we speak with Dr. Rakhshanda Layeequr-Rahman, Chief of Breast Surgery at CHI Health and Creighton University, about cryoablation, an emerging minimally invasive treatment option for select patients with early-stage breast cancer. Dr. Rahman explains how cryoablation works, who may be a candidate, and how this innovative approach may offer an alternative to traditional surgery in carefully selected cases.

  • Navigating conversations about a cancer diagnosis, especially with loved ones and children, can feel overwhelming. In this Straight Talk: Ask An Expert session, we speak with Kaylee Slepicka, Certified Child Life Specialist, as she shares practical guidance, compassionate insight, and real-life tools to help you approach these conversations with honesty, confidence, and care. You’re not alone, and there’s no “right” way, just support, understanding, and hope.

  • What does this report really mean? Biopsy and surgical reports can be challenging to interpret after diagnosis. Join Dr. Jessica Maxwell & Dr. Amulya Yellala as they explain the basics of your results to improve your understanding of a breast cancer diagnosis. We also plan to review how this information may affect treatment recommendations.

  • Join Dr. Jeffery Cooper of UNMC, Nick Marosek of Mayo Clinic as they discuss what Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is and how it can help breast cancer survivors after treatment, whether it be radiation or surgery.

  • As early detection and treatment of breast cancer continue to improve, increasing numbers of women are becoming long-term survivors highlighting concerns regarding long-term health and quality of life after cancer treatment. For many women of reproductive age, one of these survivorship concerns is the ability to have children when desired. Treatments for breast cancer including chemotherapy and long-term hormonal therapy can affect fertility and shorten the reproductive window. In this talk, we will discuss testing options for assessing your own fertility potential, when to seek fertility evaluation, and safety and efficacy of treatment options for breast cancer survivors.

  • Dr. Paige Harwell discusses all of the different options for surveillance after diagnosis. Join her as she dives into the variety of options that you can discuss with your healthcare provider.

  • Lenny Renken discusses nipple and areola tattooing options post mastectomy and/or reconstruction. Some survivors find having their nipples tattooed after surgery is an important final step in the breast reconstruction process and the closing of a difficult chapter. Without having to undergo another surgery and create new scars, an experienced tattoo artist can create a realistic representation of a nipple with exquisite details. This increasingly popular, less invasive option can help increase survivors self confidence and make them feel whole again

  • Sleep can play an integral role in the overall health of a breast cancer survivor. Whether caused by stress, treatments, medications, or other factors, many survivors report disruptions in their sleep cycle, including difficulty falling or staying asleep. For those newly diagnosed, going through treatment, or in their survivorship years, lack of sleep can take a toll on their quality of life. We're here to discuss the real issues and provide the tools to help you get a good night's rest. Project Pink'd is excited to welcome Dr. Naresh Dewan, MD as our guest expert for this series. Dr. Dewan is a Professor and Program Director of Sleep Medicine at CHI Health and Creighton University.

  • Dr. Katie Briley, DC from Performance Chiropractic we will discuss how chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapy can help to restore movement, function, and relieve musculoskeletal pain to survivors who have gone through reconstructive surgery, radiation, and chemo. Pain, weakness, lymphedema, fibrosis, and limitations in shoulder range of motion can affect your quality of life. These problems may present immediately, while others may occur over time, even months after you have finished treatment.

  • Sandy Jensen and Christina DaSilva from The Renewed Hope Boutique as our guest experts for this series. Both are Certified Mastectomy Fitters with CHI Health. Understanding what changes to expect after breast surgery, throughout the healing process, and beyond plays an important role in every survivors’ desire to feel whole again. There are often imbalances that occur regardless of whether one has had a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or reconstructive surgery, which can result in an uncomfortable bra fit.

  • An initial cancer diagnosis can trigger a wide array of emotions. Shock. Fear. Loss of Control. Sadness. Anger. Frustration. Mindfulness can help focus you. Mindfulness can help bring hope. Mrs. Linda Dempsey and Ms. Lori Simpson as our guest experts for this series. Mrs. Dempsey is a Registered Nurse and Ms. Simpson is an Oncology Social Worker. Both are employed with CHI Health in Omaha, NE.

  • Cancer survivors are a rapidly growing population in the US because of advances in treatments and earlier detection. However, survivors continue to experience significant side effects due to their medications and cancer treatments. With Ms. Schmidt, we discuss managing side effects and the importance of screening for late and long-term effects of cancer treatment and medications.
